The needs of our students and the practice of coaching are ever evolving. How can coaches find new and effective tools to better support students with limited resources? This highly interactive will feature a unique tool utilized at Texas Tech, the Motivations Through Strengths statement.

Participants will learn the context that led to the creation of this tool, the process of creation, and its impact on departmental outcomes. Participants will also be led through the tool, be equipped with the information needed to facilitate it in their own practice and engage in discussions that allow for reflection on how to create their own tools to best serve their student population.

In a society where it feels like so much out of our control is happening quickly, all the time; having practical strategies to ground students in core values and their intersectional identities will illuminate a pathway forward towards balance and self- empowerment. Through interactive exercises and group discussions, participants will learn how they can reimagine Stephen Covey’s Circles of Influence as a tool focusing communal well-being. Attendees will take away a clear map of the areas in their lives where they can effect clear change to influence action steps that result in positive outcomes for themselves and their communities. We have more control than we think, when we have a clear focus on the influence of our strengths, resources and communities.

As coaches in higher education, we encourage students to explore their inner values and belief systems, whether to support personal transformation or to guide decision-making rooted in authenticity. Yet, we rarely take time to engage in this kind of reflective inquiry ourselves. The practice of regularly articulating a clear coaching philosophy supports effective, intentional practice.

This interactive workshop invites coaches to explore the foundations of their own belief systems, building confidence and clarity in their approach to working with students. Participants will be introduced to key concepts in philosophical inquiry and several foundational educational philosophies and theorists. Through individual and collaborative reflective exercises, participants will deepen their self-awareness and understanding of their coaching identities.

Coaches will leave the workshop with practical tools for reflection and student engagement, as well as a working draft of a personal coaching mission statement they can use to articulate their professional identity within their institutions.

Group coaching is a powerful, but underutilized tool (Jain, 2024). Group coaching serves as an opportunity for students to work toward an individual goal, while supporting peers in their development. This presentation will provide an overview of one University’s effort at launching a group coaching pilot program in leadership development for graduate students. Learn about the structure of group coaching, how to set up your coaching group, and practice a few activities that resemble a group coaching experience. You will leave the session with ideas of how to build a group coaching as part of your menu of offerings.
