Eager to Launch! A Collaborative Approach to Activating an Equitable Academic Coaching Program

INSTITUTION: The Pennsylvania State University
LEAD PRESENTER: Neill Johnson
CO-PRESENTER: Denise Poole
SESSION DESCRIPTION: This session provides insight into a collaborative, multi-unit approach to developing an equitable academic coaching program at a large, public, research-intensive institution. Participants will learn about foundational action steps—from conducting a needs assessment, a literature review, and bench-marking interviews to writing a proposal, soliciting donors, and exploring other funding sources. Presenters will describe the actions completed to date as well as those currently underway. They will facilitate an engaging dialogue with participants about successful strategies and ongoing challenges, including how to save time and money, how to ensure measurable outcomes, and how to design a program that’s sustainable and scalable over time. Those with established coaching programs will be invited to share the design elements they most associate with positive program operations and outcomes.
